Servicing A Marine Diesel Engine

March 10th, 2010 — 10:26 am

In a traditional marine diesel engine its power is produced by hot compressed air igniting fuel which has been sprayed into the cylinder head under very high pressure. A marine diesel engine does not have a carburetor to mix the fuel or spark plugs to ignite the mixture. Instead it uses the pistons to compress the air to 3000 kPa, which causes it to become very hot and the fuel is ignited immediately it is injected into the cylinder.

Some marine diesel engines are fitted with glow plugs in the pre-combustion chamber of each cylinder or a heater plug in the inlet manifold. These can provide additional heat to the combustion air during the starting process.

Diesel marine engines are slower revving and heavier than gasoline engines but they are also more reliable because they do not have to count on external carburetion or that electrical spark for ignition.

Newer engines use an electronic fuel injection system where fuel and air are mixed more thoroughly in the pre-combustion chamber before entering the cylinder. This system maximizes power and fuel economy and is a less polluting option.

All boaters should have an understanding about marine diesel engine maintenance so let’s start by looking at the mechanical cycles.

Most reciprocating piston internal combustion engines work on one of two mechanical cyclesóeither the four-stroke cycle or the two-stroke cycle. These cycles list, in the correct order, the mechanical actions by which the fuel and air gain access to the engine cylinder, the gas pressure – due to combustion – is converted into power and, lastly, the burnt gas is expelled from the engine cylinder.

The Basic Four-Stroke Marine Diesel Engine

From its name, it is obvious there are four strokes in one complete engine cycle. A stroke is the movement of the piston through the full length of the cylinder and, since one such movement causes the crankshaft to rotate half a turn, it follows that there are two crankshaft revolutions in one complete engine cycle.

The four strokes in the order they occur are:

1. Inlet Stroke. With the inlet valve open and the exhaust valve closed, the piston moves from top dead center (TDC) to bottom dead center (BDC), which creates a low-pressure area in the cylinder. Clean, filtered air rushes through the open inlet valve to relieve this low-pressure area, and the cylinder fills with air.

2. Compression Stroke. With both valves closed, the piston moves from BDC to TDC, compressing the air. During the course of this stroke the air becomes heated to a temperature high enough to ignite the fuel.

3. Power stroke. At around TDC, the fuel is injected, or sprayed, into the hot, compressed air, where it ignites, burns and expands. Both valves remain closed, and the pressure acts on the piston crown, forcing it down the cylinder from TDC to BDC.

4. Exhaust stroke. At approximately BDC the exhaust valve opens and the piston starts to move from BDC to TDC, driving the burnt gas out of the cylinder through the exhaust valve which is open.

Two-Stroke Diesel Engines

The two-stroke engine uses two piston strokes to complete one power stroke and, therefore, it fires twice as often as a four-stroke engine. A two-stroke engine is smaller and simpler with fewer moving parts. A two-stroke engine has the potential to produce twice as much power as a four-stroke engine of the same size, however, because of the extra fitting required in a two-stroke diesel engine, for example blowers and governors, they become more expensive to produce. There has been a move towards four stroke diesel engines recently as they have become more efficient and smaller.

Protect Your Marine Diesel Engine

The engine is often idled to charge the batteries or cool  the refrigeration but if done repeatedly it will glaze the bores of the engine and cause premature engine failure. Avoid idling your marine engine for longer than ten minutes in a no-load state. If the boat is berthed the engine can be put in gear to create load at idle.

Every boat owner should have some knowledge of basic marine engine maintenance so grab a copy of Marine Diesel Engine Maintenance For Beginners and keep yourself and your family safe while boating.

Garmin Electronics for Boats

March 10th, 2010 — 10:25 am

Garmin is a name that is widely associated with GPS systems, and they have a line of marine electronics that carry their tradition of navigation assistance to the marine market, with a range of hand held GPS devices. They start at $129.99 and go up to $599.99. Garmin also makes a number of chart plotters with bright four inch QVGA color displays with high speed design for faster map drawing and panning. The chart plotters range in price from $499.99 to $999.99.

In addition to GPS navigation systems and chart plotters, Garmin Marine Electronics also makes VHF marine radios with intuitive features that make them an easy addition to your safety at sea. The Garmin VHF 100 has up to 25 watts of power so that you can make contact regardless of where you are on the water. Class D Digital Selective Calling (DSC) capability, is a feature of the VHF 100 that can transmit distress calls with a click of a button. If your boat has a compatible GPS chart plotter, the VHF 100 has mayday signaling and digital broadcast of the boat’s position. NOAA weather alerts and position tracking are also a feature of this radio along with the ability to track your friends who are out on their boats in your area.

Also made by Garmin are the VHF 300 AIS, VHF 300 and VHF 200. The 300 AIS is designed for 35 foot or larger boats and monitors all AIS (automatic identification system) channels at the same time, ensuring you never miss a transmission. The AIS 600 transceiver is also available. It’s a device that allows you to receive AIS target data and transmit your boat information to other AIS users in your area.

The GPH 10, an easy to use autopilot system, is the first in a line of auto guided navigation by Garmin. This system has patented Shadow Drive technology that allows the boaters to maintain control when using the autopilot system. It automatically disengages if the helm is turned, so that the helmsman can then steer the boat. It automatically re-engages if the helmsman holds a steady course. You can obtain up to three controllers for this autopilot system for autopilot capabilities from several places on board.

The TR1 Gold Marine Autopilot is sold only in North America and puts autopilot on small gasoline outboard boats with motors up to 20 hp. It’s the first true autopilot designed for smaller boats that are used for trolling or fishing. It can be set so that it holds its position against wind, current, or waves, and with the optional wireless remote, it gives control over steering and throttle control from anywhere on board.

Garmin also makes fish finders, sounders, radar, and marine networking equipment in its stable of marine electronics products. Starting in 1989, Garmin has been making navigation and communication devises based on a vertical integration, meaning that they design, manufacture and market their own products. In addition to marine navigation equipment, Garmin makes automotive, aviation, fitness, recreation (camping), and smart phone systems that bring GPS navigation to as many devices as possible.

Finding The Perfect Used Boat

March 6th, 2010 — 02:31 am

Finding the perfect Arizona classified ad with the perfect boat for you, especially if you are a first time boater, may seem like a very difficult task to accomplish.  To help you in your quest for the perfect boat, there are a few things you should know.Deciding what is important Choosing the right boat is more than just locating one for sale on one of the many Arizona online classified ad sites, like Qwixo.com. Really, its all about knowing what is truly important to you.You will need to decide whether you will be using the boat for your own private use, fishing, or cruising. You should also consider your families wishes and feelings, since buying a boat for your own personal needs without consulting your family will probably lead to disappointing experiences or less time spent on the water.

Typically, boats will fall into five categories which are fishing boats, power boats, sailboats, personal watercraft, and self powered boats.  To help you find the perfect boat, well take a look at some of the features that each one offers. The designs for fishing boats will vary quite a bit, as are the places you can use them. The boats that are meant for shallow waters of inland lakes and rivers are not the same boats meant for deep seas and great lakes.

There are many different designs, even boats that serve no other purpose besides fishing. These types of boats normally have stowage and holders for bait, fishing poles, tackle, and even special tanks to hold live fish.  Other types of fishing only boats feature an open platform where anglers can fight fish from all sides of the boat. Power boats are the most popular boats sold.  The designs on and of power boats are as varied as their uses.  Boats with seating in the front are called bow riders, which are mainly used for towing skiers or rafts. Most boats can also be used for fishing as well.  If you want to do both, there are ski and fish combinations available.

Furuno Marine Electronics

February 3rd, 2010 — 08:19 am

Once you had acquired the vessel you have always dreamed about , the next important thing to do is to equip the boat with electronics that will keep you sailing safely, locating the fish, and navigating to any place you want to go. Furuno Marine Electronics is my personal favorite marine electronics outfitter. Of course, the first electronics you should outfit your boat with should be a safety system. Beyond the mandatory safety equipment, there are many other devices that can help you greatly if you find yourself lost or in distress of some kind.

A VHF marine radio is the best pick for boating safety. It is also equipped with Digital Selective Calling system and will enable communicatoin with the Coast Guard or another boater. You can also choose either a fixed VHF radio or a hand-held transmitter. You can get VHF marine radios that are quite simple and also compact to those that are commercial grade and compliant with Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) compliant. Furuno Marine Electronics makes these in several price ranges, and they also make GMDSS integrated satellite and terrestrial radio communication systems for boats.

A Global Positioning System (GPS) is a great thing to have. The DSC capability on your VHF radio won’t send your position to the Coast Guard unless you have GPS coordinates. Plus, GPS devices are amazingly useful, as you know if you have one on your car or cell phone. Furuno has GPS receivers with Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) capability, that makes your coordinates as accurate as possible. Furuno Marine Electronics also makes GPS chart plotters with up to the minute technology.

If you’re a bass fisherman or a professional, a Furuno fish finder is one of the best you can get. { They come in many sizes and designs , including fish finders that are integrated with GPS chart plotters and others that connect up to your NavNet monitor or Ethernet hub}. Furuno Marine Electronics fish finders have digital filters and gain optimization to give you defined pictures of the conditions underwater, and some models can show fish near the seabed.

An electronic satellite weather system from Furuno will give you extra peace of mind with up to date information and forecasting. Their systems provide the possibility to overlay radar, sea water temperatures, and various reports, enabling comprehensive marine weather syste.

Started in 1938 in Nagasaki, Japan, Furuno Marine Electronics now has subsidiaries in Europe and the Americas as well as in the Far East. Their reputation is one of delivering the best quality marine electronics available. In the past five years , they’ve designed the first dual frequency search light sonar, opened headquaters in various countries , and set up a training center in Denmark in order to train commercial crews in the use of Integrated Navigation Systems . They have also developed automatic identification systems (AIS) receivers for fishing boats and recreational vessels. They’re great, reliable friends to have when you’re out on the water enjoying your boat.

How To Select a GPS

January 25th, 2010 — 06:25 am

A large number of Internet sites provide information on the best GPS options available. Usually, the top five positions are occupied by manufacturers like Garmin, TomTom, Magellan, Mio and Maestro. Like many other electronics, with every new product there comes an expectation of improvement. Innovation is part of the production process, and the best GPS corresponds to the consumer’s demands first and foremost. Here are some tips to help you with the buying decision, with the mention that no reviews can be 100% true or reliable, because no matter how objective we’d like to be, there is still a slight bias rate.

The best GPS device will always be packed with features such as Bluetooth incorporated in the design, text-to-speech functionality, MSN direct services and even accurate speech recognition applications. Another important aspect is the speed of route calculation, and why not price? It is only normal to expect incredible performance from a Garmin GPS device. Advanced lane assistance and vocal address entries make other aspects worth mentioning. The best GPS units available will have 3D renderings although this function is not available with all designs. You can count two or three features plus or minus as the main differences between competitors.

The user interface could also define the best GPS unit available. Those items that have a high user friendliness rate represent ideal choices for all categories of users. On top of all these elements that characterize very new GPS models, it is fair to refer to the pricing scheme as well. In case you want to buy the best GPS model, then, be ready to pay the price. In fact, if you read online reviews, you’ll see that pricing is the main inconvenience mentioned in the ‘bad’ section.

Deals come with the sale season. Discounts are often available for last year models for instance, and lower prices make a form of marketing strategy for attracting customers. As it happens with all purchases regardless of category, there is no absolutely ‘best’ or ‘worst’ because such concepts are relative and very much related with the personal nature of an individual. The general lines of defining the best GPS device will nevertheless include a high number of features, the latest incorporated technologies and a high price.

Addison Wilson Chitchats Discusses Choosing Small Fishing Boats

January 6th, 2010 — 06:08 am

Small fishing boats can be the popular choice but you’ve got the option of choosing something from a large cabin cruiser or yacht all the way down to a tiny canoe. Each one of them will remain a person’s favorite. Small fishing boats are used for recreation, fishing competitions, and water touring. Several little fishing boats are employed by fishermen who make their living from it, while a lot of are used simply occasionally for recreation.  Small fishing boats range in size from six to fourteen feet and seat one to 2 people. Bench seats are standard, plus raised swivel seats are optional.

Fly fishing, rod and line fishing, lure fishing, bait fishing, live bait fishing?  You can find everting you need.  Most online stores will cover fly-fishing-basics in addition to aluminum fishing boats and surf fishing techniques. Fly fishing is mostly a low key event practiced by the non-professional as a means of recreation. Thus lots of individuals love whiling away their afternoons sitting on a quiet lake away from the hustle-and-bustle of civilization where they can sit in peace plus think.

A small fishing boat is an investment which allows a man to fish for his own supper, a thrill not often afforded in nowadays’s rush of grocery stores and restaurants. A fishing boat is simply for fishing, therefore this shouldn’t be hard to decide. Yet, the kind of your fishing boat leaves area for choices.

Aluminum fishing boats are durable, but they are noisy. The best decision, probably is a fiberglass canoe. Aluminum fishing boats are sensible for individual fishermen for the explanation that they’re really easy to manage. Aluminum fishing boats are obtainable as well.

Aluminum fishing boats are manufactured with great looks plus performance previously purely on the market with the massive heavy fiberglass models. The advanced technology these days makes the aluminum fishing boats appear sleek.

49cc Gas Scooter – Information You Need To Know When Selecting 49cc Gas Scooters

January 6th, 2010 — 06:08 am

If you’re thinking about purchasing a 49cc gas scooter, but you are not entirely positive which 49cc gas scooter will best meet your requirements, here is listing of commonly asked questions that may assist you in making the right selection.

Do I need a license to drive a 49cc gas scooter?
Most cities expect you to have a legal driver’s license before you are allowed to ride your 49cc gas scooter. However, generally you do not need a specia permit for a scooter or a motorbike. In most cases, anyone with a class F drivers permit can operate a motorbike

Where can I drive a 49cc gas scooter?
Every state has specific regulations regarding where you’ll be able to ride a 49cc gas scooter. In most states it is always legit to operate 49cc gas scooters on the freeway and sidewalk, while other cities would not allow this practice. Before operating your scooter on a highway check out the local freeway patrol or licensing bureau.

What are the benefits of 49cc gas scooters?
Most people get 49cc gas scooters because they are cheaper than a typical automobile, and more fuel efficient. It is possible to find scooters that get 40 to 50 miles per gallon. Compared with riding a car this could be a huge savings.

Are 49cc gas scooters high-priced?
The price of any 49cc gas scooter will be based on on many factors. If you are purchasing a brand new scooter with the extras you will pay thousands of dollars. Nevertheless, you can find basic types, or last year’s models, for much cheaper. Always shop around in order to get the best bargain on your new 49cc gas scooter.

Where can I get more info about 49cc gas scooters?
Currently, there aren’t a huge number of internet sites that have information regarding 49cc gas scooters.  One spot that I do suggest for 49cc gas scooter information, though, is http://49cc-gas-scooter.bidandblog.com .  Inside this free resource (that is specifically focused on 49cc gas scooters), you’ll find practically every answer to every question that you could likely possess.  Additionally the forum contains live 49cc gas scooter auctions and a no cost 49cc gas scooter email alert service.  Couple that with a couple of extra search tools that make finding 49cc gas scooters easy, and I’d say that the forum is definitely worth a minute to look at.

Sailing with Sailboat Navigation Tools and Safety Gear

January 6th, 2010 — 06:08 am

For sailors cruising along national and international coastlines, prepping one’s sailboat is essential for enjoying the perfect vacation. Although outfitting a sailboat with the proper sailboat parts is extremely important, it is also important to equip sailors with efficient navigation tools and safety gear.

Venturing out on the sea for an extended period of time offers both adventures and risks. However, with the proper equipment, some of these risks can be avoided. Particularly, charting a course for one’s journey may be difficult if the sailor is not fully knowledgeable on the foreign region. Specifically, sailors are utilizing modern sailing navigation technology as it becomes increasingly available.

Aside from popular boat GPS units, improvements in navigation software for PCs have become another favorite in the latest navigation technology. Particularly, Maptech offers software such as the “Chart Navigator Pro” that promises to be easy to use and clear. Its special features include: new GPS planning and navigation software, best cartography, complete coverage on all U.S. coastal areas and major rivers, weather forecasts and free chart updates. Knowing the right course and direction for one’s sailboat is imperative in both safely steering the vessel and reaping all the fun benefits from the sailing vacation.

A sailor must be prepared for any and all emergency situations even though it may be frightening to think about. For these situations, safety and survival gear such as lifejackets and buoys are required for all sailing vessels. Other sailboat safety gear include: first aid kits, fire extinguishers, safety harnesses, and Emergency Position Indicating Radiobeacon (EPIRB). With their EPIRBS, ACR Electronics are guaranteed to ensure one's safety and survival when overboard one's sailboat. This tool works as an internal GPS receiver that transmits a sailor’s GPS position and identifier to SARSAT satellites, immediately notifying search and rescue (SAR) forces. Special features include: FastACQTM GPS engine, 100 m GPS position accuracy, a full functional self test of internal circuitry and battery voltage test, provides a GPS acquisition test, and automatically activates when out of bracket and in the water or can be manually activated. Both safety hardware for sailing (e.g. lifejackets) and technological devices facilitate in aiding a sailor’s survival.

It is very crucial for sailors and their families to be ready for their sailing excursion by not only practicing caution but also by possessing the appropriate sailing tools. With the proper navigation equipment and safety gear, a sailor and his or her family can fully enjoy long vacations out on the sea.

Building a 16 ft. Grand Banks dory

December 27th, 2009 — 06:21 am

As a kid I did a lot of boat building, mainly scale models that were not able to sail, although I did actual build a few boats that were, more or less, capable of sailing. I even once build a 10 feet boat, or shall I say raft. I accomplished this with a few friends and we had great fun sailing it on the local river. It was not really water proof and while one person was rowing, the others had to make sure that they removed the water quicker then it was entering our boat.

Then sadly one day we failed. I was rowing at the time, and we were in the middle of the river when it was clear we were sinking. I stopped rowing to assist with the hosing, but this only slowed down the process of sinking, it did not stop it. So I started to row again in on effort to reach dry land before we sank, thus avoiding having to swim to safety.

And guess what: We made it! Just before the boat really started to sink we managed to jump ashore. Here we watched as our pride and joy slowly sank to the bottom of the river. It was then that we realised we were at the wrong side of the river and this left us with a problem. We either had to walk to the nearest bridge, 10 kilometers upriver, so that would have been a 20 kilometer walk, or swim to the other side.

We decided on swimming. We did not see anyone around, so we quickly undressed, and with one hand holding our clothes above the water, we managed to get back to our own side of the river. Just as we were struggling to get out of the water a group of girls from our own school were passing by, and I can tell you we were not happy!

This all happened a long time ago and a few times in my live I have had plans of building a boat again. I have spent a good amount of time looking at boat building plans, but with boats size does matter.

Later, who knows , I might build a 40 feet cabin cruiser, and tow my Grand Banks dory behind me. Then, if my cabin cruises sinks, I can always row to safety in my Grand Banks dory, dry and with my clothes on.

Buying The Right Fishing Boat

December 14th, 2009 — 05:44 am

If you are planning to buy a boat, you'll first need to evaluate what you plan to do with it.  If your primary purpose is fishing, then you'll want to  look into boats that are designed primarily for fishing.

If you happen to be a tournament fisherman, or hope to be, then you probably wouldn't be happy with a boat less than a 150 HP motor and shorter than 19 feet in length.  Those of you who plan to fish in  really deep water on a regular basis will probably need a 200 HP motor and at least 20 feet of length.

If you don't plan to tournament fish, but go after bass fish instead, you'll want a 17 - 18 foot boat with at least a 115 HP motor. This way, you can enjoy the lake or the river.

Those of you who like to fish for species may want to look for a more versatile boat with plenty of walking around room, higher sides, and a differentseating arrangement.  This type of boat is ideal  for several people, even a trip out with your  wife and kids.

If you plan to fish on occasion, but not enough to invest in a boat, you may want to look at a  fish and ski model.  This is a hybrid boat, crossing between a bass boat and pleasure boat, and can easily serve your purpose.

The biggest part of the buying process is getting what you can afford.  Luckily, there are many new boats available, giving you several that fit your budget.  If you prefer, you can shop and find a used boat that fits both your needs and budget.

Tips for Choosing Boat Electronics

December 14th, 2009 — 05:44 am

So you’ve found the perfect boat. You are now ready to outfit it with baoting electronicsYou have a vast array of choices, which is great, but it may make it seem overwhelming choosing from among them. Much will depend on the type of boater you are and the type of electronics you use in general. Can you read charts and the stars, or will you only want the best in electronic navigation? When you’re on your boat, do you plan to leave civilization behind, or will you want phone or email contact? Do you have a favored boat electronics brand, or would you rather cherry pick the best from several different brands? Know yourself, your boating plans, and your general attitude toward electronic gadgetry, and you’ll have an easier time choosing how to outfit your boat.

Picking the most suitable boating electronics can not only make your boating experiences more fun and your fishing more productive, but it can be relative to your well being as well in the event of an emergency. Learning to use your electronic equipment is equally as important as choosing it. And that means you’ll have to take the time to learn how to operate the equipment regardless of whether it’s from manuals, instructional videos, or having a friend show you how to operate it.

Furthermore, you need to know how to use other navigation methods if your electronic navigation system fails. Knowing how to use charts and plot your course is still an important skill. That being said, here are some tips to help you choose your electronics.

1.Amoung the boating electronics you should choose is the AIS or automatic identification system. Its purpose is for Vessel Traffic Services to find and broadcast the identity of boats. Your AIS devise is the most important electronic device you’ll buy. It allows boats to exchange electronic data including position, identification, and course. Vessel Traffic Services stations cause your vessel to show up on computer screens if you have an AIS transponder. If you have an emergency or should become lost this is critical.

2.Your boat electronics package should also include a GPS Plotter as one the important components. One popular option is a multifunction GPS/plotter, which puts multiple functions into one device. Mutifunction displays can even allow you to run radar, GPS and fish finder data on one screen at the same time. They are also relatively easy to expand for other functions and displays.

3.      If you have a choice of displays, remember that the larger it is, the easier it will be to see. Remember, that on a boat, screen viewing can be far from optimal during sun glare and rough weather conditions. You should choose at least a 7″ display, but if there is room and it will fit your budget a 10″ or 12″ will be much better.

4.When there is an interest in onboard entertainment you may want to coordinate your mutifunction display for several perifheral electronic devises. Other devises like satelite recievers, computers, DVD players and music systems can be connected. These are great extras to have, but don’t get them at the expense of choosing inferior safety equipment. And make sure that all your navigation equipment is mounted where it access is easy.

5.      A depth sounder is another good investment in the safety of your boat. If the weather turns bad, a depth sounder combined with your GPS plotter can help get you safely back to shore.

6.      There is an ever-evolving suite of boating electronics goodies becoming available for marine settings. Now there are laptop computers designed for marine use. These computers do what normal laptops do, but they can also be equipped with special software like RayTech RNS 6.1, which allows multi-format charting, hsb2 electronics integration, and worldwide tides and currents among its many functions.

In summary, your AIS device, GPS plotter, and depth sounder are the most critical pieces of boat electronics for your vessel because they pertain to your safety and the safety of your passengers. Have these pieces in place first, and if it’s in your budget, there are plenty of extras you can add in the way of entertainment equipment and fish finding devices that you can have fun with.

Boat Towing

November 30th, 2009 — 12:42 pm

A trailer can add a new dimension to the sense of freedom associated with boating.  Once you have a trailer, you’re pretty much free to boat anywhere you decide, lakes, rivers, or inlets.  A trailer allows you to explore your area, and is also the most affordable way to store your boat.

Boat towing or trailering across the United States is subject to different state laws as far as maximum speeds, trailer equipment requirements, trailer dimensions, brakes, insurance, and accessories such as reflectors are concerned. A separate permit for boat towing in each state is also required.

Most Americans live within a 100 miles of boatable waterways, and boat trailering is something of a national craze. Statistics show that the easiest boats to tow on a regular basis measure within twenty-five feet in length, since these allow for easier maneuvering on highways. Boat-towing vehicles and trailers differ quite a bit from other kinds because of the unique shape and dimensions of these crafts.

There is a mind-boggling array of towable boats available on the market today. These include air boats, fishing boats, bow riders, canoes, cuddy cabins, day sailers, deck boats, sailing dinghies, flats boats, jet boats, inflatable boats, and a host of others.

If one isn't an expert, it is important to follow a trailering-safety checklist while towing. The checklist should include guidelines to loading, leveling, driving, unloading, and launching. Probably one of the most common and dreaded hazards that all boat towers face is compromised tightness of the nuts on the trailer wheels. These tend to loosen with distance covered. Wheel maintenance in all its aspects should be a primary concern of every boat trailer owner.

As with most other kinds of towing, each state has its own set of trailering laws that will prescribe limits to weight, speed, and minimum equipment. These are strictly enforced, and it is wise to be prepared for all eventualities.
