250 cc is a good starter bikes and buy one that’s already been dropped. because you will drop it time to time
you are right on the time to buy tho.. check craigslist.org and you will see a ton of bikes in ur area pretty cheap.

GREAT starter bike
I would get a gsxr 750. It will be cooler to tell your kids that your first bike was a gsxr….that’s if you have to go for a sport bike. Personally, the shadow 750 is a great value.
My first bike was a ninja 250. At the time it was everything I wanted and needed, but I used up every bit of it and now I have to say under my breath what my first bike was.
