Im thinking the Mercedes C250 cdi blue-efficiency, which does 54.3mpg and has 214bhp.
Closely followed with the BMW 330d, with 49.6mpg and 242bhp, and the Mini Cooper D, with 110bhp and 72.4mpg
What do you think? Any others?
Im only interested in models that are easily available and without modification, so not lpg or electric conversions, and only fairly mainstream models, i.e. ones you are likely to actually see driving around, so not some prototype 300mpg super-efficient ones either.
Im in the UK and this is a European models but i’d still be interested in hearing from anyone in the US or anywhere else in the world.
For anyone in the US, these are diesel models you probably dont get, the mpg figures are official ones for the combined cycle (highwaycity) and for imperial gallons. 1 imperial gallon = 4.54 litres, 1 US gallon = 3.78 litres.
Need to be fairly sporty or good to drive cars like the 3 i listed
By the way, anything under 30mpg is not fuel efficient! So no Evo’s or corvettes please.
Huba, i think you mean the passat bluemotion. It gets 57.6mpg but only has 110bhp so its not a high performance model.
The BMW 320d beats this easily with 58.9mpg and 177bhp.
PS. the UK isn’t just England! i live in Wales.
These are kinda premuim models so they are quite expensive, but cheaper models with similar mpg tend to have quite a bit less power.
In the UK, the prices for the 3 i listed are roughly: BMW – £30,000, Merc – tba but probably around £30,000. Mini – £14,000.
If you just want great mpg, the ford fiesta 1.6 econetic does 76.3mpg and costs about £11,500 i think

i would say the mitsubishi evolution 8 or 9. The car is incredibly fast, handles extremly well in all weather conditions( depending on tires) and gets great gas milage for a 300hp car.
Dollar for dollar, it is perhaps the best buy you can make.
i would say a Mitsubishi or Lancer They are the only ones a would pick thank you please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is a new Volkswagen diesel (Passat, I think) on the market that gets great mileage and has Consumers Reports fawning over it. Not yet available in the States but should be fairly soon so it may be in England now.
Chevrolet Corvettes. ~400hp and mid-20s MPGs.
Unfortunately, for me, none of these diesel powered vehicles are available in the United States. Maybe they will be in a year or two. If they were available now, my choices would be:
FIRST – The Mini Cooper D, fuel mileage of 72 mpg. WOW!
SECOND – The BMW 330D, base price about $33,000, 49 mpg
THIRD – The Merceded C250 CD1, too expensive at $57,000, 45 mpg
My REAL choice would be the 2009 Prius, $22,000, 48 mpg. It is available.
…. and if a mass-produced plug in hybrid electric highway capable vehicle comes along, I would forget all of those listed above.
