When painting a boat what is required to be used?

confussed asked:

I’m planning on painting my old bass boat and I want to do it myself even if it’s just cheezy. I’m planning on doing my best in my garage. But I don’t know how to start, should I sand it down first buy primer and the paint or what? And at the end I want to use the clear protection like on cars; whats that called? And is i a good idea?

    Sand, primer, and marine paint.

well my good friend, seeings how i work for my dad at his auto body shop, i do know a few things, im no expert though, it sounds like you have the right idea already, what i would suggest that you do is, go to your local, automotive paint store/supplier, and ask them about refinishing products for your boat, you can use automotive paint, and as to the ? about the clear coat, that might not be a bad idea, but consult paint store first,

first steps is to high pressure wash to remove surface contamination.Next step is to sand down to create key profile for paint to anchor ( please select correct grit size recommended finer grit,if too coarse it may cause deep scratch).Wash and flush all dust generated from sanding work.Buy paint and 1) primer 2)Top coat and optional with clear coat. Epiglass by Akzo Nobel have full range of boat yatch paint and you may ask them to provide suitable paint system.Auto and general paint are not recommended for the hull it may peel off from the impact and drag with water when your boat moving especially at high speed as these paint could not stand impact. The best, get marine epoxy paint. Take note:Specify material used to built your boat to the marine paint dealer and they should know what paint is suitable.

You can use automotive paint for your boat . If your boat is really fade and chalky looking wet sand it with 600 grit wet sandpaper then get a primer sealer tis will give the paint something to stick to as well as keep the old fiberglass from suckiing up the paint in some spots causing it to look blotchy. Get a quality Clear coat with a hardener to cover the base color abnd it will look like new. I have been custom painting a striping boats for 10 years . Just take your time and keep it clean and dirt free between steps you’ll do fine.
