The Right Boat Trailer Can Protect Your Boat From Hazards

April 30th, 2009 — 07:56 pm
boats
Owning a boat is just the beginning. In order to get your new boat from one location to another, you’re going to need a boat trailer. In fact, boat trailers come in many different styles and weight capacities, so a little research in advance will help you make the right decision when it comes to deciding what kind of boat trailer you need.

Boat trailers come in several styles and are made of different materials. Some are made of aluminum and have certain weight capacity limits. Some are designed for inboard boats only, while others are designed for larger, outboard craft. Most boat trailers purchased at a boating supply warehouse can hold up to 15,000 pounds, but always check specifications before purchasing one.

Many boat yards offer one-size-fits-all boat trailers, but try to avoid the temptation of saving a few dollars to buy such a generic boat trailer. Purchasing boat trailers to specifically fit your boat will prevent slippage, wear and tear and possibly more severe damage when towing back and forth.

Boat trailers can be called many different things, such as Easy Loader boat trailers, or Magic Tilt or Fast-Load boat trailers. Each boat trailer is designed and made with one specific boat model in mind, so be choosy when it comes time to narrow down your boat trailer search to just the right fit for your boat. Some boat trailers are totally submersible while others aren’t.

Floating style boat trailers offer aluminum I-beam designs as well as catamaran storage cradles and boat lifts. Fast load boat trailers offer single axle, tandem axle in both ‘regular’ and heavy-duty designs, as well as triple axle models. Some boat trailers come with rollers, bunks or boards, and deciding which one is best for you and your boat isn’t easy.

Experience loading and unloading your boat will often have a big impact on decisions about which type of boat trailers to purchase, so if you’re a novice, you may want to head for your local boating dealer and ask some pertinent questions.

Price ranges of various boat trailers also depends on which type you want, its construction materials and whether or not you have your boat trailer customized. Many people customize a generic boat trailer to their boats, while others opt to have such customization done upon ordering. Boat trailers can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars, so make sure to check around on brand names and prices when narrowing down your search.

When thinking of purchasing boat trailers, make sure that your vehicle is able to pull the weight of both trailer and boat when loaded. You’d be amazed at how many people don’t take the combined weight of the two into consideration when buying. For this reason, many professional boaters opt to purchase aluminum style boat trailers, as they are more lightweight than galvanized steel and are also easier to keep clean and shiny.

Owning a boat can be a lot of fun, but it’s also an expensive hobby, or sport, or business accessory. No matter what you’re using your boat for, boat trailers are a necessary piece of boating equipment, and finding the right one for your skills and your boat is essential.

Why is boat evaluation important?

April 30th, 2009 — 05:24 am

From the viewpoint of the seller of a boat or yacht, but just as well for other involved people such as buyers, brokers, and marine surveyors, finding out the monetary worth of a boat is one of the most crucial but also one of the most harrowing aspects of marine life.

If you are selling, the proceeds that you will get on your motorboat, sailing yacht or fishing pontoon will either determine how much you will have in your pocket if you are moving away from marine life, or if you are upgrading, it will settle on the size of your next vessel.

At first glance buyers may think that the subject is less crucial for them as there is a lot of choice of similar boats with clear prices, but make no mistake – don’t become complacent and forget that not getting the best deal may mean losing tens of thousands of dollars.

But doing this is easier said than done. Without adequate knowledge of boat values, without knowing about the current market situation (often influenced by season and location), chances are that you will end up less well off than you thought. There are possibilities that you will do a deal which might seem to you very profitable in the beginning, but that a few days later you might realize that you could have got a much better deal in the nautical transaction.

Which is why boat evaluation cannot just be an afterthought or a given, but must be considered with care. First of all, the prospective buyer or seller needs to decide whether to go solo, or whether to hire a boat evaluation pro. Marine brokers can help to sort out the issue for you.

In fact, as there is a lot of information available on the subject for those who are willing to spend some time educating themselves, you can do this yourself if you prefer not to be dependent on someone else’s opinion.

What you have to do if you decide to follow the self-appraisal route is to check out as many resources that you can to approximate the value of your boat based on its mode, age, characteristics and state of repair, aiming at establishing realistic minimum and maximum price levels that you would realistically be able to sell the boat for.

Online or paper trade magazines are a very popular source to compare the min-max values of your boat with comparable objects – check out classifieds, journals, various yards and boat traders.  You will find plenty of listings with prices, and if you look at various ads over time (in different issues) you will get an idea of how fast objects are selling, that is if the asking price was right.

Your next stop should me your local marina’s party or some other kind of social get-together, where you can find other boat owners that can brief you on the current state of the market.

New boat exhibitions are good to gauge current fashions. Fashionable items demand a better price, and you can increase the value of your marine transaction by finding out what features and accessories are currently over- or undervalued.

The Go Kart – A Brief History

April 27th, 2009 — 12:15 am

superkart

The history of go karts can be traced back to the 1950s. Invented by Art Ingels, he built his first go kart in 1956 in California. What started out as a way for airmen to get their thrills has evolved into a worldwide sport for many people. Go karts and kart tracks have become a hit all over the world. While the first karts were comparable to the riding lawn mowers of today, newer models can travel at speeds of 160 mph or more. It’s incredibly amazing how far they have come.

Go karts have many different names and spellings, including go carts, go-carts, pedal go karts, shifter carts, gocarts, gokarts, a superkart, enduro carts, and more. Whatever the name, one thing is certain; driving one is exciting. If you have ever wanted to know how it feels to race Formula 1 or Indy Cars, then a go kart can give you that experience. Kyle Petty, Tony Stewart, Darrell Waltrip, Sarah Fisher and Michael Schumacher, all of whom are professional drivers, got their start racing karts.

So what exactly makes a gokart a gokart? Gokarts have a motor, transmission, chassis, seat and 4 tires. Since they don’t have a suspension, the chassis has to provide flexibility while retaining enough stiffness to let the kart grip around the track, especially through the turns. The chassis can be either be closed, also known as a caged chassis, which allows protection for the driver in the event of a rollover, or open, which provides no driver protection.

Engines used in gokarts are typically either 2-stroke or 4-stroke. The 2-stroke engine is usually more specialized and is made by companies like Honda or Briggs and Stratton. The 4-stroke engine is usually the standard type used in lawn mowers. The 2-stroke is typically more powerful than the 4-stroke and can be up to 30 horsepower or more.

As with Formula One racing, the kart tires can be either rain tires or slicks. Slicks have no tread and are used to achieve the best traction on a dry track. Rain tires are used during wet weather and have a tread. Icy conditions warrant specially-made spiked tires that give good grip on slippery surfaces.

Gokarts can be a stepping stone for drivers who want to work their way up to professional Formula One or Indy Car racing. It’s a less expensive way to get involved with racing. Of course, go karts are not just for those who aspire to become professional drivers. Mostly go karts are raced by people who want to have a little fun. Their popularity has reached all over the world. There are kart tracks for every skill level, from the extremely tame tracks located in family fun centers and amusement parks, to high end speed grand prix karting tracks found in larger cities.

The safest and most inexpensive way to get into racing is with a go kart. With the many stages of difficulty and experience, anyone can race at a level most comfortable for them. If you are a talented driver, then a little practice and some luck may get you to the level of racing higher than you might ever have dreamed.

Popular Ski Boats

April 26th, 2009 — 09:42 am
boats
Cruising the waters and going for a ski on your new ski boat is the perfect way to enjoy those long deserved days off.A popular outing and sport, water sking has been around for a number of generations.

To ski on water you not only need the right kind of skis, but also the right kind of boat. For a better ski boat they should have small wake and have nippy maneuverability and turning capability, and getting the biggest meanest boat doesn’t make it better. Some popular ski boat ranges are equiped with an inboard engine rather than outboard, and while many people ski using general purpose deck ski boats, the best are purpose built.

There are many popular ski boat ranges in Aussie and since there are so many of them and most are great for Australian conditions for water sking. It would be easier to single out those slightly less fabulous than the rest than to pick the best, and you can’t go by price. Australia is a nation perfectly situated for water skiing, and they know how to build the right ski boats for sale to do the job.

If we were to name a few, then of the popular ski boat ranges in Australia, Lewis must be amongst the most favoured, being one of the major ski boat builders in the world.  Anywhere there is water skiing you will find a Lewis boat, built by Australia’s oldest manufacturer.

Although the original Lewis boats were made of wood, they are now fiberglass that provides a strong but very lightweight boat.  Even though the internal stringer system is generally wood, Lewis boat sales are high preformance and have the speed and dexerity for great skiing. The 2280 and Revolution are typical of the Lewis range with their zippy Mercruiser engines that produce a small wake at speed for a smooth slalom ride, and nice big wake for wakeboarding at lower speeds.

Their well crafted Wake towers can be pimped any way you like them, with sound system speakers, . However, the disadvantage in a dual purposeski boat or wakeboarding vessel is that you can get a rougher ride on skis.  It isn’t always ideal to have a dual purpose boat, but if you enjoy both sports then you should get enough performance from a wakeboarding and ski boat to make you happy.  If it’s championship performance you are seeking, then a specialist boat for sale for skiing could be an option.

A well known and popular boat builder Bayliner has a great standing in the 16-22 foot range of ski boat sales The Bowrider 205 is is a great example of skiboat with a 220 hp Mercuiser engine. This ski boat for sale comes with and great sound system from its stereo controller that allows you fit a CD player, iPod or MP3 player. Building boats for over 40years Bayliner has the experience to know how to build good boats. These ski boats for sale are quality, and respond to the helm perfectly.  They have great acceleration with a agility for some great water skiing.

Crownline boats are for the boating enthusist that likes a bit more power.  These boats for sale exude class and quality, and the Bowrider 240LS is great for skiing. With a variety of colours to choose from and your Mercedes engine up to a maximum 425 horse power.  With many great options including an entertainment system, sink and shower it makes it a great fun throughout your ski boating day. If you prefer a deckboat to a bowrider for your skiing, then the Crownline 252 EX has similar features with the same outboard engine, and a Sony Marine stereo system as standard. Crownline may be a little more expensive but you pay for quality and one of the best ski boats for sale.  Again, though, they are multi-purpose and while a common choice with the mid range ski boat skier they are not designed to be specialised ski boats.

For a championship specialist ski boat, then Skicraft must figure in there somewhere.  Based in Bayswater, Skicraft boats, have been building top of the range ski boats for sale since 1969, offering very reliable turning and maneuverability, but is also very safe. From the lustrous and prompt 202 to the new V-Drive eXV Skicraft are true ski boats.  The ExV is an updated model of the popular eX2, with a good heaviness design allowing you to switch from wakeboarding to skiing with a turn of a switch.

Skicraft normally build specialist boats, and the V-Drive is commonly better for wakeboarding. However, wakeboarding boats for sale can be costly because they have to be heavier to produce a good wake. Skicraft have developed a wake control technology whereby you can adjust the size of the wake to switch between skiing and wakeboarding, and all at a price well below that of a purpose-built wakeboarding boat.

However, the luxury cruiser that catches everyones attention is the new Mustang. Since being taken over by new owners, Mustang has re emerged, and is going from strength to strength. Their most recent boat, still to be unveiled, is the Mustang 2008 430 Sports Coupe.  How good this will be for ski boat we don’t know, but it is equipped with Volvo IPS 600 engines as usual, with 418 HP each so is going to be prompt enough.

These are among the more popular skiboat ranges around Australia, and with so many more ski boats for sale that we have missed it might pay to visit a great website Boats To Buy for both new and used boats for sale online.

How do I ride my bike without getting my jeans dirty with bicycle grease?

April 23rd, 2009 — 11:25 am

Richard asked:

I live on a college campus and usually ride my bike from the dorm to class and to the library. I’ve noticed that everytime I ride the bike the right side of my inner jeans would have all these browinish grease stain all over it. Is there any way I could avoid this, besides not wearing jeans. I only brought jeans to school and don’t have shorts to wear to avoid this. I could get a bike chain guard, but I really don’t have the money to get one. Is there any way I could position my pants or perhaps a certain way I could ride my bike that would keep my jeans clean. It gets annoying washing the jeans. I have to wash the jeans 2 times, even when I dab the grease in detergent. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Mountain Bike Product Safety

April 22nd, 2009 — 08:07 am
bikes
A few months ago one of my friends called to tell me he was going to be late to the trail because he had a part on his bike that was being recalled. He wanted to stop at the bike shop and have his part replaced before our regularly scheduled ride. I too thought it was a good idea to get the part replaced before our ride so I told him that I will see him when he is finished at the store.

When I met up with my friend later in the day I asked him how he found out about his recalled part. He told me that his wife signed up for email alerts on product recalls. She subscribes to these email notification to be aware of toy issue for their children and it just so happened that a mountain bike part was on the email.

Just like other consumer products, mountain bike products occasionally get recalled for various reasons. I do not want to speculate so I am not going to give examples. It is important to be aware and not to ignore these recalls because your safety could be in jeopardy.

So in an effort to keep riders aware of product recalls the links below will direct you to the Consumer Affairs and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission websites. These sites will allow you to search their database for product recalls that might pertain to your bike, gear or both.

The two sites listed below are not meant to be the all encompassing sources of information. It is to help you get started in you product recall search. If you come across more sites with mountain bike recall information let us know and we will add it to the list.

Should I Consider Boating?

April 21st, 2009 — 12:30 am

motor boating

Boating has become a popular hobby. To battle the scorching heat of the summer months, men, women and children of all ages take to the water in every watercraft possible from canoes to kayaks to jet skis to yachts. Some choose to make boating a way of life and purchase waterfront property or even live full time on a houseboat.

Boats are generally used for several activities. One of the most common is fishing. Wide varieties of boats are appropriate to this activity. If you have a small boat that you can transport, research fishing opportunities before you travel. Portability is an attractive feature in inflatable boats, dinghies and folding boats. Sitting around the campfire trading fishing stories and singing sea shanties adds a pleasant new dimension to any camping trip, and many campgrounds even offer boats for rent. If you plan to do your fishing closer to home, you may want to invest in an air boat or one of several styles of bass boats.

Another popular boating activity is water sports. Bring a pair of water skis when you go motor boating and you have an automatic afternoon of fun. Sports boats and motor boats provide just the right power for a variety of exciting water sports.

Perhaps sailing is more your style. Imagine relaxing on a classic boat that is powered by the wind, living the same adventure once experienced by pirates, merchant marines and explorers. Sailing requires a good deal of work and practice, but the rewards of this type of boating are immeasurable.

If you live near the water, it is easy to make boating an important part of your life. If you live further from the water, you will have to factor in travel time and expenses when deciding if the boating life is right for you. Many who live in landlocked areas make boating a vacation activity.

Take advantage of opportunities to experience the water without making any sort of commitment. On your next vacation, sign up for boat tours that are offered. Depending on your destination, this may be a swamp tour, glass bottom boat ride, or even a paddle wheeler. Odds are good that if you enjoy these sorts of excursions, you would enjoy piloting your own boat.

If you only need a boat for a short time, renting is a great option.  Rentals come in all sizes, types, and prices. If you are unfamiliar with what to look for, ask someone who owns a boat.

If you decide that you enjoy boating, do not be too quick to buy a boat. Many people who enjoy boating as a hobby decide to buy boats only to discover that the boat owner lifestyle does not work for them. Before investing in a boat, make sure you are comfortable with the idea of storing and/or trailering the boat. If you can, help out a friend who owns a boat so you have a good idea of what is involved.

For some people, boating is an obsession. They love it so much that they live on a boat. For others, however, boating functions nicely as an occasional hobby. The best way for you to find out how much you will enjoy boating is to head for the water. Factors such as budget and proximity to water will determine your future dedication to boating.

Boat Storage: Where You Store Your Boat Matters

April 13th, 2009 — 04:25 am
boats
No matter where you live at and how often you boat all boat owners must face the dilemma of finding boat storage sooner or later. Boat storage must be found before going on long trips, when bad storms approach, and when the winter starts to draw near. New boat owners often find this task intimidating and are not prepared to make a decision when the time comes. To avoid having to make a hasty, last minute, decision that could lead to your boat being seriously damaged or destroyed it is important that all boat owners begin planning for storage as soon as they purchase their new boat.

Many new and old boat owners choose to store their boats out of doors. Outdoors boat storage is popular with boat owners that have easy access to a lake where storing the boat on the lake or water is easiest and best. This will allow the boat owner and their family to have easy access to the water whenever they feel like taking a ride or going fishing. Having the boat stored outdoors on the water is extremely convenient and makes it easier to participate in last minute boat sports and water activities.

Boat owners who are not near the water or who are looking for long term storage solutions often store their boats on their own private property. In many areas this is usually the backyard. There are some areas in the southern United States where it is not uncommon to drive through an entire neighborhood and see dozens of boats sitting idle in backyards waiting to be used. Storing boats outdoors is usually done because of convenience and for financial reasons. Placing a boat outdoors on ones personal property is usually free and marinas and lakes usually do not charge much for boats to be docked permanently.

The downside to storing a boat outdoors is the elements. While many boat owners do not think the storage location of a boat is important at all there are others who have had their boats completely destroyed who will tell you differently. If an unexpected storm comes up and your boat is resting in the water it could easily be smashed to pieces right along side any other boat that is near it. When your boat is left sitting outdoors on your property overtime it will rust and deteriorate it as it is constantly exposed to inclement weather. This damage and deterioration will often lead to expensive repairs and in some cases it might be necessary to completely replace the boat.

An alternative to storing a boat outdoors is storing boats indoors at facilities that are specially designed for storing boats. These facilities are usually extremely close to local lakes and marinas making transportation back and forth easier to manage. In some cases the indoor storage facility will offer transportation assistance to their loyal customers. This is done to encourage boat owners to use their boats as often as possible without having to worry about the cost of transporting their boat back and forth between storage and lake front.

Indoor boat storage facilities are usually spacious offering boat owners the chance to properly maintain their boats. These storage facilities make it easy for boat owners to check their boats for damage and to even complete repairs. Some indoor facilities even boast their own mechanics making it easy for boat owners to hire someone onsite to complaint repairs to the boats. This space and feature becomes especially useful when a boat needs to be stored for long periods of time. Having an indoor storage space for your boat that can be used for repairs makes it easy to weather proof a boat before leaving it for a long period of time.

The major downside too many when it comes to indoor boat storage is the price. It can be extremely expensive to rent a large space for the storage of a boat. The price goes up if the storage facility offers climate control, extensive security features, and more benefits. Storage rates often increase along with the size of the boat making it extremely expensive to store large boats that are perfect for families. Even though the price of storing a boat indoors can be a deterrent for many it is often well worth the money. Indoor storage will help save you and your family money in the long run by helping to prevent deterioration that could lead to serious boat repairs being necessary in the future.

Even though it could be tempting to choose the cheapest boat storage option available this might not be the best choice for you or your boat. Where you store your boat can affect whether or not the boat you own remains in top condition for years to come.

Buying A Boat – Basics For Beginners

April 11th, 2009 — 04:54 am
boats
Ask yourself two basic questions before you do your boat-buying research. First, what will you be fishing for? Are you looking for a quiet sunrise break on the lake? Or do you want to test your skill on the high seas? Second, when and where will you do your fishing? That quick sunrise fishing trip at the lake will take little more than a row boat or raft. But the serious deep sea fishing trip requires a sturdy dependable vessel with ample safety features.

Dealers of Ranger boats talk about a 5-star advantage that applies to all boats, no matter who manufactures them. The five points are quality, performance, innovation, safety, and value. What materials will offer you quality and value? Is your candidate boat made of plastic, metal, or fiberglass. Does it have a heavy-duty bilge pump and heavy-duty wiring? Will it withstand stormy seas?

Here are a few specifics to consider when buying a boat. These are just a sample of the factors that can make the difference between an enjoyable and successful fishing trip and a heartache. Be sure to do more research. Visit boat dealers and talk to people who already own their own boat. Buying a boat can be an expensive proposition. Make sure you are well-educated so that your decision is one you don’t regret.

How will you tow your new boat?

Your tow vehicle will dictate some options when you’re buying a boat. Be sure it has the proper power to get the job done. Generally, a larger boat may require a vehicle that will pull up to 3500 pounds, especially where you have to travel hills and mountains. A small fishing boat, like a kayak or inflatable raft, may need a special rack for your car top. Before you go shopping, be sure you have the correct equipment to transport your new boat.

What materials are appropriate for your fishing needs?

In smaller lakes where there aren’t big waves, a light aluminum may be perfect. Aluminum is more forgiving of bumps and bangs than fiberglass or wood. It’s also less expensive. A light metal boat or inflatable raft will be best for early mornings on the lake, but they won’t last in the bay. For heavier seas, you’ll need more durable materials, a sturdier craft, and a powerful motor.

Should you choose a new or second-hand boat?

Second-hand boats are cheaper and hold their value longer since they’ve already depreciated. You’re more likely to get a dependable, economical deal with smaller boats that don’t have a lot of equipment or features. But if you’re investing in a larger boat with lots of features, you’ll want the warranty that comes when you’re buying a new boat. First-time buyers may be better off buying a boat from a dealer. Once you have some experience owning and operating your own boat, you’ll be in a better position to judge the value of a used boat. At the same time, if you’re buying a boat for long trips or high-sea fishing, be prepared to spend thousands, or tens of thousands, to get a good vessel. It all depends on how you feel about safety and dependability. Take your chances and save money or spend the bucks and be secure. It’s all up to your adventurous nature.

How does the boat handle?

As a first-timer, you may not know what to look for in handling when you’re buying a boat. This is where the experience of other boaters may prove extremely valuable to you. But think about how easily you’ll be able to launch and retrieve the boat from a ramp. Will you be able to quickly attach it for towing? How much labor are you willing to invest to move your new boat around? And if you’re buying a boat with some power, you’ll need to understand how well it maneuvers in the water. Boats aren’t as easy to test drive as automobiles, so you’ll need to be certain you can handle a high-powered fishing boat.

Buying a boat is an exciting adventure. You’re buying much more than a water craft. You’re buying years of pleasurable fishing experiences. It might be tempting to rush into your purchase, buying a boat that appeals to your taste. But slow down and take care that your new boat meets your needs. We can’t stress enough how important it will be to do your homework.

Surf the internet to learn about boats, to find reviews, to listen in on forums and blogs, and to find out what models and brands have the best reputations. Talk to other boaters, and don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions at dealerships. A good dealer will be more than willing to invest the time to make sure you’re an educated buyer.

What sort of bike should I buy?

April 10th, 2009 — 08:07 am

Col De Tourmalet Ascent in 5 Mins

What do you want to do, what do you want to see and where do you want to do it? Cycling is not simply pushing pedals round as fast or as slow as you want. Many different activities are covered in the topic of cycling and each one has a different equipment need and fitness requirements.

Initially you will need one basic thing, a bike. Bikes usually have two wheels when you visualize one. There are trikes that are three wheeled and quads with four that are much more strange contraptions. Bikes ususally have just one seat although there are tandems which are making a comeback for couples who never want to have to look at one another again.

The what do you want to do is also important. We are concentrating on two wheels in this intro for the occasional cyclist.

If you want a fast track bike, increasingly popular as more velodromes appear there are certain companies’ products to look at. There is no point buying a specialized bike for the mountains and then trying to speed round the embankments of a track in a Madison event.

If you want a road bike, most people are now looking for one that weighs virtually nothing so that when you get to the inevitable hills the gear ratios allow you to think only of losing some weight to make the ups easier.

If you are looking for or want a mountain bike, then the rigid tubular structure, well sprung suspension and really thick tyres may help you avoid the nastiest falls and the inevitable broken collarbone (Yes I am bitter about it)

The occasional cyclist may well want a hybrid that allows you to cope with the hills and a bit of off road as well as getting up a head of steam on the flat roads on the way to your destination.

Whatever your decision as regards your need for a bike and the type of cycling that you want to do the benefits that you will find for your health and wellbeing are manifold. Weight loss, lower resting heart rate and a general feeling of wellbeing will only be offset by initial saddle soreness until you become accustomed to the bike. Cycling is an activity that allows you to take advantage of the countryside and beauty but don’t get into it too seriously to start as you will be frustrated by 60 year old fatties passing you at will to start. They are total weirdos and you will never find a decent reason why they move much faster than you do.

How green is scrapping an old car and buying a new one?

April 10th, 2009 — 04:48 am
car
P P asked:

People who own cars that have high c02 emissions are going to be taxed more under the guise of a ‘green tax to encourage green behaviour’.

The only logic here is that the government want people to scrap their old cars and buy new lower emission ones.

How green is it to scrap a perfectly good car and replace it with a new one?

Where would there be figures/data for this?
