I am looking for a gift for a friend who has just started work as a boat builder. Can anyone advise me on the best Chisels to buy as they need to be durable and easy to use in all types of weather.

For fairing the gunnels and chines, I like to use long handled chisels. For most other work, the short models available at home improvement stores are good enough. The word durable is a hint that there will be some just get it done work.

Lowes. Ace hardware, and Home Depot have sets that will be ok.

You really want to knock your mate out you wont go far wrong with sorby chisels. They do a registered range which have a metal band round the top to stop splitting the handle. Even if you only get one of them, once introduced to quality he will do the rest.Next year a tormek whet stone. Look that up on the web, it has a follower to hollow grind chisels to. Jeff.

This is going to depend on just how ‘good’ a friend you are,so if someone handed me a set,or even a couple of Lee Nielson socket shank chisels,I would be speechless with thanks.Made the old fashioned way and made to last several lifetimes, beautiful, but ye god’s they cost big time,if only I could talk myself into them.Your friends only problem then will be stopping them getting stolen.and the envy of his master.
