You buy it just like any other vehicle and yes it has to be registered and insured. But you must be licensed to drive a motorcycle first. You will have to take a motorcycle safety course through the DMV to be licensed.

Edit: I should have mentioned that this is procedure in California where I am from. Some states may not require you to take a training course. Though I would recommend it for your safety and the safety of the drivers around you. Too many times I have seen men with a bike to big for them or wearing a skull cap instead of a proper helmet. Or even wearing synthetic fabrics and tennis shoes when riding. I can’t imagine what would happen to these people if the crashed their bike. So, please, if you can take a course before you go riding on the street.

ARe you serious? Getting a motorcycle is very similar to getting a car. Assuming you are 18 with decent credit and a down payment, you simply go to the dealer, tell them which bike you would like and they will sell it to you. Most places need to see your insurance card before you can leave, and the Lien hold will require full coverage insurance. When I bought mine, I paid cash and didn’t have a license, but Jack in Wyoming was a buddy of mine and let me take the bike (He had my check).

Have you ridden before, or taken the MSF class? I would strongly encourage you to do so.

Are you under age 25? Expect to pay through the nose for insurance especially if you get a sport bike.

Once you buy the bike, the registration should come in the mail depending on which state you are in.

Get some insurance and safety gear and you a good to go.

Make sure you watch the mail and DMV will send you a letter when you have to pay the registration again.

To buy a cycle from a dealer, you need money and identification. You will also need to have the cycle insured and inspected in order to have it registered with the state and plates issued.

If you buy the cycle outright (cash), you will receive a certificate of title saying you own the bike. If you buy it on a loan, the lienholder’s name will appear on the title until the loan is paid off. Once it is paid off, you will receive a statement from the lienholder saying the loan is paid, at which time you take that and the certificate of title to the DMV, and they will issue you a clear title with your name on it.

If you’re buying from a major dealer (i.e. a brand licensed dealer, not Joe’s used cars and bikes), the dealer can handle most of not all of the above details for you. The Honda dealer I bought from was annexed to the DMV, so they were able to inspect, register and plate the bike for me right there. All I had to do was call my insurance company with the bike’s VIN, they faxed temporary insurance cards to the dealer, who could then register the bike. The most difficult part was filling out a mound of papers.

Sassifrass is not totally correct. In NYS, you do not need to possess a motorcycle license in order to buy a motorcycle. I don’t know about other states, but that requirement seems illogical.

  • Im picking up my first motorcycle; is a nightster a good motorcycle for a beginner?

  • A good mileage to look in a used car is comparably in between 10,000 to 40,000 miles. Even if the car is in this range, get it checked by a mechanic or if you are pretty good in cars, do it yourself. I would suggest buying a NEW Chevy car because if something happens with your car in less than 90 days, you can return the car back and get a full refund. You might get some cheap Chevy cars! If you really want to buy a used car, than follow this advice and I hope you get your car!

  • I was reading something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your linear perspective on it is diametrically opposed to what I read before. I am still reflecting over the various points of view, but I’m tipped heavily toward yours. And irrespective, that’s what is so great about contemporary democracy and the marketplace of thoughts on-line.
